TIPS FOR WORK ** FROM BIG LAW

While the environments of the corporate office and a large law office can have notable differences, I found it very interesting when a friend making the move into big law shared with me some ‘Tips for Work’ which were communicated to in her new work ecosystem. I re-share them again here to see if you see any benefits or can draw any comparisons. They tips clearly articulate many norms that unless written out can go unspoken in many workspaces.

Tips for Work

  1. DO NOT ever tell me you haven’t done something before. No new employee has ever done anything. If that excuse had any validity, nothing would ever get done.

  2. Do not ever tell me what the problem is without having a solution.

  3. If you want face time with me, then get your *** into my office.

  4. Your success is nobody’s responsibility but your own.

  5. We are in a service business. We serve clients. Sometimes that requires working at times we would prefer not to work. Quality of life is very important, but we serve our clients first and ourselves second.

  6. Do not check your phone at lunches or dinners with clients. It is rude. If you must check your phone, excuse yourself from the table.

  7. The weekend is not a two day vacation every week. E-mails need to be checked and returned regularly.

  8. Do not go to sleep without checking your e-mails.

  9. DO NOT turn in work and tell me all the reasons it’s not as good as you want it.

  10. The appearance of knowing what you are talking about is almost as important as knowing what you are talking about. You have to inspire confidence.

  11. Can we do something for a client? The answer is always yes.

  12. Do you have time do something that is asked of you? The answer is always yes.

  13. If you do something for a client, immediately provide an e-mail update with how it went.

  14. Hard work makes up for a lot of things that might otherwise get you in trouble.

  15. If I suggest that you should do something beneficial to your career, you should DO IT.

  16. Acknowledge all e-mails from superiors and clients. Don’t leave us wondering if you received it and if you are doing something about it.

  17. Return all phone calls within twenty-four hours (preferably sooner).

  18. Working for me is much easier after you earned my trust and respect. Thus, you might as well get moving down that road as quickly as possible.
